Chat GPT_An Artist’s Tool
There is a lot of controversy right now in the art world about AI and artists. Bringing up the topic is like talking politics or vaccinations. Both of which I avoid. There are a lot of heated debates going on about using it. Art groups are beginning to ban art made from AI in their gallery or shows. And though I haven’t delved into that aspect of AI or how one even uses it for creating art Chat GPT has caught my interest.
For those of you wondering what AI is it stands for artificial intelligence. And though I can’t give you the scientific description of it because that is not who I am I do know that it is behind a lot of things we are currently using. These are the bots collecting information about you. They control the algorithms on the social media platforms you use. They answer those annoying 24/7 customer service calls. It is used in healthcare, finance, transportation, manufacturing, education, entertainment and so much more. They gather information and they can access it faster than any human. Is all their information accurate? I would guess no maybe not but they have warehouses of info. I don’t think it is humanly possible to imagine this amount of information.
But what about Chat GPT? What is it? GPT stands for generative pre-trained transformer (say what??) which is a program that can write like a human. It was introduced in November 2022 but I have just gone down its rabbit hole in the last few weeks. To me it has similarities to google but to the highest power. It works like a search engine and is giving Siri a run for her money. To use it you just type in what you are wanting information about and voila you got it. It’s like magic! It can write in paragraphs, outlines, songs, even poems, it can be used for brainstorming, writing blogs, essays, social media posts, marketing tips and so much more. All you do is type into the search info what you are looking for.
The more specific you are the better the results.
For example:
Or a more refined search…
Here is another example:
Recently I was looking for a title to this painting and nothing was coming to me. If you are like me sometimes a title comes organically and sometimes I just can’t find the right words even though I may know what I want to say. So I tried ChatGPT…
I put in the search…
I didn’t like the results so I refined my search
I didn’t get that yes I was looking for with any of these titles but I did like the word Whimsical that was used and I liked that Heights was used instead of on the hill. So I came up with the title “Whimsical Heights” which felt good to me. I guess I used the chat to brainstorm ideas and it worked. Would I have found a title another way? Probably, but it may have taken longer and this was more fun!
So what are some other ideas on how to use the chat to help us as artists? My friend who turned me on to Chat GPT asked how to get engaging social media tips, how to attract customers to an artist open studio tour, what social media prompts can you use to attract people to your open studio. There are so many things we could use this for. Recently a group of us artists were doing monthly art exhibitions and had to come up with titles for each one. Man I wish I had this chat to use then. We labored long and hard on those titles.
Lets ask Chat what we can use it for:
Of course we could get a lot more answers if we kept asking and refining our search but you get the drift. It’s endless! But don’t take my word for it. Try it out yourself and please do let us know if you come up with some good ways to use it.
There are tons of Chat GPT apps out there but this one is free right now and is what I have been using if you want to check it out.

Thank God you don’t have to spell correctly for it to work. Haha
